Life In The Slow Lane

I’m a little slow when it comes to technology. Marketing types would never call me an “early adopter” by any stretch of the imagination. It’s not like I work by candle light or have completely banned all signs of the modern age from my life (I listen to my MP3 player, have a digital camera, and use my GPS system to get from place to place), I’m just not that great with all of the fancy gadgets or technology terms. In fact, when my web designer has technical questions, I try to stay out of it. I send him directly to the IT team. If the question goes through me, he might as well be talking with my 4-year-old son, because it will most certainly become lost in translation.

I must say, I come by it naturally.

My dad is wonderful, kind, compassionate, easy to talk to. Really, he’s a dream father. But God bless his sweet precious heart, the man is one of the least technological people you’ll ever find. A few years ago, he wanted to buy a surround sound system. A friend of ours was talking to him about an amplifier. For twenty minutes this friend went into the amps, subwoofers, decibels, megahertz, and so forth. On and on about how the music would be transmitted and how the sound would come out differently depending on the various speaker configurations. The whole time, my dad, the kind, interactive listener that he is, nodded, added a few uh huhs, and I really thought, “Wow, dad’s getting this!” At the end, our friend asked if my dad had any questions.

This is the part of the story where I have to stop typing because I’m already laughing! Whew! O.K.

He asked my dad if he had any questions and dad said, “Just one. So, if you push the button in, does that turn it on?” At first, we just stared at him. A few seconds went by, then we all doubled over in hysterics. My sweet daddy-o. I love him to pieces! Like I say, I come by it naturally.

For those of you who are fully immersed into this age of technology, zooming down the information superhighway, you can find me in the slow lane. Or maybe, off of the road relaxing. Having a picnic with my family. Maybe picking some flowers. As you pass me by, give a little honk and a wave. We’re both headed in the same direction. Oh, don’t worry, I’ll eventually get there. Sooner or later. Probably later.

You are soooo good at humorous writing, Michelle. So good!! Loved reading this blog (maybe b/c I'm right there in the slow lane with ya?) :-)

Marelen Burgett:

I definitely know this story :) I've been in your Dad's shoes for 34 years...just tell me what I need to know to make it work.
