Why do you exercise? What drives you to get out of your warm bed, in the wee hours of the morning, and lace up those kicks so that you can hit the pavement? What motivates you to plan your days so that you’re able to consistently spend quality time at the gym? What inspires you to get your body in motion while so many others choose to stay glued to their couches? Is it to burn calories? To reduce your risk for lifestyle-related diseases? To shape your body by building muscle? To counteract the daily effects of stress? While all of these are valid, solid reasons, my response to Why do you exercise? can be summed up with one word: endorphins.
I have another fun contest for you! This time, I’m looking for runners.
My Running Moms Rock cofounder (Erika Westmoreland) and I are writing a new book on running and inspiration and we’d love to hear from you! If we select your ideas, your name will appear in the book! This book will be target toward ALL runners, both men and women.
1. What (or who) inspires you to run?
2. Please share your favorite running tips, healthy recipes, or any other words of advice for fellow runners.
3. We’d love to hear an awesome running story. Inspire us!
I’m delighted to introduce you to The Running Mama and share with you my guest post for her Summer Running Series. I hope that after taking a moment to check out my post titled Improve Your Mood, you’ll be inspired to get in motion!
This month, Running Moms Rock is featured in an article in North Texas Child Magazine. We’re getting excited about our 5K coming up on April 24. While it’s a “Running Moms Rock” event, the race is for everyone: men, women, children, dogs, walkers, joggers, runners…
If you’re anywhere in the DFW area, I hope you’ll come out! This race benefits the Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County.
Running Moms Rock’s mission is to inspire moms to live passionately and fearlessly while improving themselves, their families, and their communities in the process. We’re putting on a 5K Run on April 24, 2010, which benefits Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County. The CACDC’s mission is to provide justice and healing for abused children through interagency collaboration. This is an outstanding organization; one that I’m delighted to support.
I’ve gotten back into running. I’m still very slow but the process of building back up my endurance is actually quite enjoyable. For me, running provides a challenge while being great for my mind and body. It will be a while before I’m back to running half marathons, but in the meantime, I’ll be chugging along…just trying to do my best. Here’s a picture of my friend Erika and me at a recent 10K. Can’t wait for the next one!
All I can say is….
We came. We competed. And we finished! That’s what really matters.
So, whatever you do, do not look up my race stats and see that my times were much worse than they were four years ago. Make sure not to notice that we came in very close to last place. Just remember that we finished. Make sure you remember that. Some days, that’s all that really matters.
I seem to have developed some kind of disorder. SignUp-itis. NotReadyForRunning-osis. Or maybe JustAJoker-ism. Back in the day, I would sign up for an athletic event, and having that race out on the horizon would motivate me to train. It seems that recently, I’ve been signing up for races with the hopes that just signing up for the event and just the fact that time passes will get me ready.
I’ve been learning the twitter ropes. Out there chirping …just like a little bird. (I was looking for a picture of a bird singing, but I just fell in love with this little fella! So cute! )
I still don’t really know what I’m doing with twitter. For a while there, looking back through my posts, my twitter page resembled a workout log…hmmm. How strange. Well, I’ll get better as time goes by. The point is that it’s fun.
So, after my month-long quest to find technology balance, I’ve finally realized: Everything In — wait for it —Moderation! Ah-ha! So, a little facebook here, a little twitter there, post a blog, write a newsletter…as long as I don’t get all riled up, I’m good to go! Whatever you’re out there doing, (and right now I’d say you’re reading my blog —thanks by the way), remember: everything in moderation, learning new things takes time, and always take time for a little fun!
So, the plan was for us to drive to San Antonio today. The plan was for me to run a half marathon in the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on Sunday. And here I am. Blogging to you from Dallas. Plans change.
I signed up for this half marathon two weeks after I ran my first half marathon last April. Somehow, along the way, I got off track with my training. It happens. And as The Gambler, as well as a friend of mine, said, “You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em. Know when to walk away, and know when to run.” So, this time I won’t be doing any running. But, I would like to add: “And know when to give yourself a breather.”
